More about Uncle Eddie

Filed under: The Greenes, general interest — samkuglen @ 3:42 am
Every once in a while I get a message that lets me know that you all are reading this blog.
Here’s a response I got from Sig Front, a friend of the Greenes in Wheeling, (I remember hearing his name all the time both from parents and from Uncle Jack) in response to the post about Uncle Eddie Carenbauer.
Enjoy!  and let me hear from you if you feel so moved. . .
Dear Eddie,
It was great talking with you on Saturday. I tried several times to wish Joanie a Happy Birthday, but they were not in. It was kind of you to give me her phone number. I remember her from the time she was little more then about 8. Pig tales, that red hair and spunky. She was always an alive young person, and I doubt she has changed much. I lived in Santa Monica when she and Sam moved out there and they were very kind to me. I remember their first home quite well.
No one could beat them as a couple. We last saw Joan and Christine when they visited us one day a few years back. They were visiting you and Mary Eleanore in Ft Myers.
I enjoyed seeing that photo of you ready to hit the baseball. It was a real baseball, that you often hit into our yard across the street. I was probably about six and you about 16, or was it before that ? Is that Henri in back ? I think so. In fact, it triggers my memory everytime I see that photo, that I can recall being there. Of course as soon as I saw you with a bat, I would run over to watch. It was the perfect place to hit.
Sam Kuglen’s detailed blog about his Mom brought back so many memories for me. A lot of my world as a kid kept me in awe of all you Carenbauers. When I was 10, Johnny offered me the privilege of helping him wash the white sidewalls of his very ritzy Lincoln Zephyr that Uncle Frank had given him. I scrubbed those white walls many times, but still never got a ride in it. A guy who lived a block away on Lynnwood gave me a ride in his rumble seat. It was a coupe, but a big seat in the back. He would always have three girls in that rumble seat on a nice day, and at age 7 or 8 he seemed to me to be one fantastic guy. Andy Hardy style………
When you went off to the Army Air Corp I was sure proud of you. So was everyone else in my family. I learned of your missions flown from someone, and kept track of what was happening in the war and your air war. Nothing was better then when you came home.
Jack Greene, John and Frank were also away, and as Jack and I became good friends later on, I learned what he did in his Mountain combat team. Each of  you, in my mind,  played an exciting and strong role in World War II. I have much recall of my feelings for all of that. We lost a cousin when he fought as a tank commander in Italy and was killed by the German tanks, which were all 88′s and we had 60 MM. His name was David Gratz,. His mother, my aunt Anne,  was Dad’s sister. The family lived in Manhattan. He was a Captain.
Funny how Sam’s in depth tribute to his Mom has stirred so many memories for me.
You sounded good Ed. I am thankful your knee is healing well. You’ll be back at it soon enough, especially as the weather warms and you get some sun on it.
We are headed out to dinner. We have friends visiting Naples from Munich. They are friends from way back, both of whom worked with Toni in Paris at the Lido. They are twins and I remember them from the night they opened the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and they were the warm up act for Dean Martin, who loved them.
They are cooking for us tonight and another couple. They are in their mid 70′s, but play golf every day here and can really hit the ball. They love golf.
We head to Miami next week for a night, then Palm Beach to be with a close family whose granddaughter is being Christened. They want a couple of Jewish witnesses.
Then we come back, and leave Naples for Washington to see our family and grandchildren there, then to our Berkshire home in Western Massachusetts. Mountains, cool nights etc.
Thanks for sending me that wonderful family recap Sam did. Wonderful.
Keep yourself fit, well, and in good spirits. Toni sends her love, as do I..
Sig

Isn’t that cool?  I am touched that Sig got the blog about Uncle Eddie and felt moved to respond.  Paints a cool picture of Uncle Eddie, huh?

Thanks, Sig

Joan’s 80th Birthday in San Diego

Saturday April 24th at Venice Pizza in San Diego we had a great family birthday for Joan’s birthday.

We had a great time celebrating Mom’s 80 years on the planet.  Lots of us wore something green in honor of Mom’s maiden name – GREENE – get it? There was salad and pizza for dinner and a fantastic cake that must have been about 1,000,000 calories per slice.  Mom wanted a small, informal gathering, so it was mostly kids and grandkids, along with Joan Wilrodt, her daughter and a former worker from the Southern Cross (and I am horrible with words).  Dick had a list of 80 gifts he was had either already given Mom, or surprising her with later.  Ever one to use the latest technology, he gave her an IPod ITouch (I heard wrong at first and thought he had gotten her the IPad).  Now she and I can play Scrabble when we are in the same room.

Maribeth and Nathalie and Joy got up and did a tribute to Mom in song, lyrics courtesy of Maribeth and the music courtesy of a current pop song (I want to say a song by Justin Bieber, but I am probably wrong).

Some of us gave reminiscences – the best were from Amanda Aaron, who spoke of having a grandma who she could go boogie boarding with, and Zack, who remembered lying in between Grandma and Grandpa watching TV.  Mom also had the chance to speak with Pat Devlin, who she had not spoken to since Pat and I were both about 20.

Here are some pics:

Happy Birthday, Mom!  Here’s to next 80!!

Here’s a Youtube link for the Oprah Show

Filed under: general interest — samkuglen @ 4:39 am

In case you missed it, here is a youtube link to the John Burroughs High School performance on Oprah.

The 2 girls with solos are both in my 11th grade Honors English class – Shannon Ary does the “Vogue” solo and Ashley Aparicio does the “4 Minutes” solo.  I think about half the kids in the “Suprise” segment either were in my class last year or are in one of my classes this year.

Check it out!

My bad. . . Oprah, Wednesday April 7

Filed under: general interest — samkuglen @ 12:21 am

OK, Ok! Sorry. . . .  my bad. . .

I am under lots of stress with mandated State testing beginning tomorrow, AP exams a month away, news that the Burbank Unified School Districtl board wants to give us a pay cut and increase our class size to 40:1, while trying to exercise once a day and eat right. . .

The JBHS Powerhouse Choir is performing on The Oprah Winfrey Show on Wednesday April 7.  I have been promised there will be surprises and that the show is really good.

Watch “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Thursday, April 11!!

Filed under: general interest — samkuglen @ 4:23 am

At John Burroughs High School, where I work, choir is a big deal.

For the past two years, our choir program has been the highest rated “show choir” in the U.S.  They travel all over Southern California for choir competitions and once a year travel to a national competition somewhere in the United States.

If you have seen the TV show Glee you have seen the choir room.  They shot the pilot for the show at JBHS and they have built their choir room set as an exact replica of the choir room at our school.

Last week, they had an Oprah surprise moment when 3 Glee cast members surprised them with a camera crew during period one and told them Oprah was flying the top choir, “Powerhouse,” to Chicago to perform on The Oprah Winfrey Show (Oprah is picking up the tab to fly the choir to Chicago).  Oprah is doing a Glee theme show, so the Glee cast is going to be on the show, and “Powerhouse” is going to sing 2 Madonna songs (My understanding is they also get a special meal cooked for them by Art Smith, Oprah’s celebrity chef).  The kids left on Thursday, are taping the show bright and early Saturday morning; the show will air on April 7.   Two of my 11th grade students, Shannon Ary and Ashley Aparicio, have big solos in the “Vogue” number, so pay special attention to that one.

In addition to Shannon and Ashley, Caitlin Dietz, Max Reynolds, Sydney Baldwin, Matt Rogers, Connor Murphy, Tyler Wade, Allie Adkins, Kendall Capshaw,  and others I am sure I am forgetting, are also appearing on the show.  They have worked hard for this great opportunity and I am very proud of them (even the kids who aren’t my students).

Watch Oprah April 7th!!
