Kuglen genetics

Hi Sam,

I hope you are well. I really like your blog and think it is an excellent way to keep people in touch. I am writing to you because I had my entire genome scanned by www.23andme.com and learned about the mtDNA-Haplogroup to which I belong. Since Mitochondrial DNA is passed from mother to child in a direct line, this would indicate that, unless my mother is not my mother and my mother’s mother was not really her mother, my mtDNA comes from your grandmother, Frances. All of Bom Bom’s children would have her mtDNA, as well as all her daughters’ children (i.e. the Rigalis, Salles, and MacDonalds). So, my mtDNA-Haplogroup (also Bom Bom’s) is T2b2, which is thought to have come to Europe from the Near East around 12,000 years ago, bringing agriculture along with it. T2b2 has a particularly high concentration in West England and Ireland (which is, as I gather, where Bom Bom’s maternal antecedents came from). In addition, T2b2 is associated with many European royal families.

Anyway, I just thought I would let you know, because it is fascinating and takes genealogy to new heights. By the way, I just finished my semester and am free for the next two weeks. . .

Rory
